Owen's The Magic Feather Sketch

So this is my sketch for the Flight assignment.  Boy on a fish.  I always like working in some magical items like the wish bone and the stone with a hole in it hanging from the tail fin.  Let me know if there is anything I should change or add, but I'm pretty happy how it is.

The Magic Feather Sketch, Pencil on Strathmore 2ply, 11" x 17", 2010.

  1. Nice! I really like the composition. I also like what you're doing with the birds a lot. I think the one thing that stands out to me is that the kid looks really young...like 5 or 6. So to me it makes me wonder how or why such a young kid is on his own dangerously flying around on this fish. It might be shortness in limbs or something. I'm thinking more like 10-12 year old where they're a little bit more lanky, and quite a bit more adventurous...at least when I was that age I was out adventuring all over. 5 or 6....not so much. Anyways that's just my opinion. check out some Scott Altmann or jon foster kids...petar meseldjia(?) is also good. A+ for getting it in early!

  2. Owen this looks great! Love the idea, and the composition is great. I think Scott is right about the kid looking young... I think it's the head-to-body ration. Really young kids have big-looking heads :) I actually don't have a problem with the kid looking this young (bizarre situations with young kids happen in kids books all the time - look at Chris Van Allsburg and Maurice Sendak), but if it's for a young adult audience, then you should think about making him older. Overall it looks really good so far!
