So here is my final (kind of) sketch and a color comp. I want to make the trees more gnarly and interesting.. right now they're a little too straight, the foreground trees at least.
I realllllyyy love this color comp and I have a sinking feeling I won't be able to replicate it with watercolor... but we'll see. I still struggle with watercolor sometimes and feel like I try to do things that watercolor aren't meant to do, but damnit, I can make it happen!!!! Just need patience!

Well, I think you can just stop right there. Your color comp is practically a finished painting! It looks so great - I love the way you use color. I don't know that I would change much of anything. Maybe bring out the little creatures just a teensy bit more - not sure I would have seen them if I wasn't already looking for them, although I know they are supposed to be hidden so you don't want them to pop out. Anyway, that's just nit-picky.
ReplyDeleteI see what you're saying about making the trees more twisted, although they don't bother me as they are. Maybe just modify the one that cuts across the unicorn's body so that it has a more interesting shape.
I like what you did combining watercolor and gouache in your Alice painting - maybe combining the two will get you closer to the look you are going for? Watercolor is tough, but you handle it well and I'm sure you will do a great job :)
Color comp is incredible! I thought the facing away uni might not work but it feels great here. The purple evening lit middle ground is fantastic - might be a notch lighter in the final. And maybe just a few more spots of the orange sky peeking through at the middle level (near the uni's tail). But it's all here. The only other thing I would say is the uni can have a lot of (light toned)colors in it and still look white, be careful not to just use blue, grey and white in it. Keith Parkinson did a great "white" dragon with lots of color in it here ...

It looks white but a lot of the lightest colors are really pale pinks and oranges. Gives it a lot of life and meshes it with everything even as it stands out.
